The sister of philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche, Elisabeth Förster-Nietzsche, founded a German colony in Paraguay called Nueva Germania (New Germany) with his husband Bernhard. Initially it was a failure, Bernhard killed himself and Elisabeth returned to Europe, but the town survived and today it produces yerba mate. They still speak German, along with Spanish and Guarani.
