If by "people" you mean leftists (huge, massive, colossal, gargantuan stretch), it's because they are being fooled by all 3 enemies of the West at the same time: China, Russia and of course Jews. These three groups want the West to collapse ASAP. Losing our lead in AI would raise the chances of civil war, so that's how those 3 fool the left. As for the right wing, it's mostly fooled by Jews and not really by Russia or China. Jews fool the right (like Trump) by making sure that, if we lead AI thanks to the right, Jews stay in control of it (see Palantir, OpenAI, Anthropic; they're all jews), which would raise the chance of civil war anyway since everyone hates jews (so, they want you to hate them).
